EU countries may decide the fate of Ukrainian refugees earlier

European Union countries may determine the fate of Ukrainian refugees well before the temporary protection program, which is in effect until March 2026, concludes. This was stated by Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala during a joint briefing with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, held on May 5 in Prague.

'The protection of refugees in the EU is valid until March 2026, but we cannot wait until the last moment to decide what will happen next,' emphasized the Czech Prime Minister. According to him, the main discussion on this issue is scheduled for June this year during the meeting of the EU ministers of internal affairs, where the Czech Republic will be represented by Minister Vít Rakušan.

Fiala stressed the need for an early development of a common European approach regarding the extension or modification of the rules for the stay of Ukrainians after the expiration of the current protection term.

During the meeting, the leaders also signed a Joint Declaration on the establishment of a Unity Hub in the Czech Republic. President Zelensky explained that such centers are aimed at providing Ukrainians with legal assistance, facilitating employment, and determining further life plans both in the Czech Republic and at home.

Despite the fact that European institutions have not yet presented specific action scenarios after March 2026, discussions on the possible extension of protection or its transformation into new formats have already begun. The final decision will depend on the development of the situation in Ukraine and the ability of the European Union to continue supporting millions of Ukrainian citizens who have found refuge in European countries.

Meanwhile, the Swedish government is considering a massive increase in financial assistance for migrants who wish to return home.
