During his diplomatic tour of Southeast Asia, Chinese leader Xi Jinping actively promotes the concept of an 'Asian family' and calls for closer ties in the region, countering US attempts to impose restrictions on trade relations with China.
According to Bloomberg, during a state banquet in Malaysia, the Chinese leader emphasized the importance of unity among Asian countries. 'China and Malaysia will support countries in the region in combating geopolitical and bloc threats. Together we will protect the bright prospects of our Asian family,' Xi Jinping said in the Malaysian capital Putrajaya.
The two countries signed extensive agreements to strengthen economic ties. In a joint statement, China and Malaysia agreed to enhance cooperation in industry, supply chains, data exchange, and specialist exchanges, and also committed to implementing a five-year economic and trade cooperation program.
The Chinese leader's diplomatic tour covered three countries in the region - Vietnam, Cambodia, and Malaysia. According to Bloomberg, this visit comes amid preparations by the Trump administration to seek cooperation with trading partners surrounding China.
In an article published by Cambodian media, Xi Jinping also called for a stance against unilateral actions. 'Together we must fight against hegemony and the politics of power,' he wrote, adding that both countries must 'resolutely oppose any attempts by external forces to interfere in our internal affairs and sow discord.'
According to the publication, the Chinese leader's statements arose at a Time of escalating trade war between China and the US. Washington is preparing to propose restrictions on China's production capabilities, including additional tariffs on Chinese goods in exchange for trade services.
