Regional contrasts: pensions in Ukraine

According to information from the analytical company OpenDataBot, the size of pensions in Ukraine depends on several factors, such as the duration of employment and insurance experience, type of activity, and the presence of additional allowances. Even if a person does not have sufficient experience, they are still granted an individual retirement pension. However, it has turned out that the size of the pension also depends on the region of residence.

As of the end of 2024, the average retirement pension in Ukraine was 5,789 hryvnias, while the minimum pension for those without sufficient employment history was 2,361 hryvnias. According to data at the beginning of 2025, nearly 26% of pensioners or 2.68 million people received less than 3,000 hryvnias per month. In total, the average payments amounted to 2,759 hryvnias.

Another interesting statistic shows that 27% of pensioners continue to work despite their age. While only 12.2% of retired people receive payments exceeding 10,000 hryvnias per month.

The highest pensions in Ukraine are received by residents of Kyiv. In 2024, the average pension in Kyiv was 8,017 hryvnias, which is almost one-third higher than the national average. According to the Pension Fund of Ukraine at the beginning of 2025, the average pension in Kyiv increased to 8,708 hryvnias. In the Kyiv region, it amounts to 6,671 hryvnias.

In second and third places are the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, respectively, with an average pension of 7,814 hryvnias and 7,314 hryvnias. They are followed by the Dnipropetrovsk region with a pension of 7,082 hryvnias.

The lowest pension payments are observed in the western regions. For example, in the Ternopil region, although the pension increased from 4,485 to 4,931 hryvnias, residents still receive the lowest amounts in Ukraine. The Chernivtsi region ranks second with an average pension of 5,100 hryvnias, and Zakarpattia is third - 5,175 hryvnias.

Of course, the size of pensions is related to the standard of living and the economic situation in each region. This data may be useful for pensioners who are planning a move or seeking better living conditions after retirement.
