Italian Prime Minister Meloni Faces Consequences of Betting on Trump.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is facing challenges on both the international and domestic political fronts as she seeks to strengthen her influence at the European level. She was the only EU leader present at Donald Trump's inauguration and planned an official visit to the White House. One of the goals of this visit was to obtain relief from American import tariffs for Italy.
However, a new wave of American tariffs could harm the Italian economy and impact Meloni's position. Additionally, she is facing conflicts within her government coalition and demands from the EU regarding defense spending and support for Ukraine. The breakdown of the transatlantic partnership also places her in a difficult situation.
'Her balancing act is starting to show its true cost,' said Atlantic Council expert Beniamino Irdi. 'The pressure Meloni is facing is a result of trying to bridge the wide gap in transatlantic relations.'
Despite this, Meloni still retains influence in European politics. Her government is stable, and Italian bonds are trading with the lowest spread relative to German bunds. She is also trying to increase defense spending and find alternative solutions, but cooperation with the US is not very fruitful.
